The U.S. Class 8 market is dominated by Freightliner. Despite a year-to-date decline of about 1.3 percent, the truck brand held a market share of over 36 percent in December 2018. This means that more than one in three Class 8 trucks in the United States is a Freightliner-badged vehicle.  Truck demand indicative of economic trend In 2018, medium and heavy-duty truck sales were driven by double-digit growth rates in the U.S. freight trucking industry. Not only did trucking companies experience a shortage of drivers, but they also felt the need to expand their capacities. In total, customers in the United States bought 250,545 heavy-duty trucks between January and December 2018. Daimler is Freightliner’s parent company and sells trucks under its Freightliner and Western Star brands; Daimler recorded total sales of 190,000 trucks in North America during the 2018 fiscal year.  Heavyweights in the market  Class 8 trucks fall into the heavy-duty segment of the U.S. truck market and are categorized by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration as vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating in excess of 33,000 pounds.
